JP ‘Peli’ Pereat - Why I do what I do
Twenty years ago my nephew was born with autism. This changed my life. In an effort to find help for him and to connect with him I began to take him surfing. Through sharing my love of the ocean with him, we became closer and I noticed an evolution in his well-being.
I have now been introducing children and adults with autism to the ocean and teaching them to surf for nearly twenty years. Around ten years ago I co-founded local Malibu charity, Mighty Under Dogs (MUD), bringing surf therapy to children facing social challenges and cognitive physical and emotional disorders. Over the years we have have also created programmes for children with autism across the world including US, Mexico, Costa Rica & Nicaragua.
Here are some of the many benefits for my clients and why our work together has been so powerful…
Sensory Integration
The ocean provides a rich sensory environment, with its textures, sounds, and movements. Surf therapy allows children to explore these sensory experiences in a safe and controlled setting, helping them to regulate their sensory processing and improve sensory integration skills.
Physical Development
Surfing requires balance, coordination, and strength, making it an ideal activity for promoting physical development in children with autism. Through paddling, standing on the board, and riding the waves, children can improve their motor skills and overall physical fitness.
Social Interaction
Surf therapy offers opportunities for socialization and peer interaction in a natural and supportive setting. Collaborative activities such as group surfing lessons encourage children to communicate, cooperate, and develop friendships with their peers, fostering social skills and building self-confidence.
Emotional Regulation
The therapeutic nature of the ocean and the rhythmic motion of the waves can have a calming effect on children with autism, helping them to regulate their emotions and reduce anxiety. Surf therapy provides a therapeutic outlet for expressing emotions, promoting relaxation, and enhancing overall emotional well-being.
Self-Esteem and Confidence
Mastering the challenges of surfing, such as catching a wave or standing up on the board, can significantly boost children's self-esteem and confidence. Success in surfing translates into increased self-belief and a sense of accomplishment, empowering children to overcome obstacles both in and out of the water.
Connection with Nature
Surf therapy offers children with autism the opportunity to connect with nature in a meaningful way, fostering a sense of wonder, appreciation, and environmental awareness. The ocean's vastness and beauty provide a serene backdrop for therapeutic activities, promoting relaxation, mindfulness, and a sense of belonging.
